Hluhluwe Umfolosi Game Reserve


The Hluhluwe Umfolozi area is not only home to the Big Five, but also offers spectacular tourist attractions such as sightings of whales, turtles, protected reefs and a pristine, protected coastline.


There are many exclusive, Private Game Lodges in and around Hluhluwe, as well as an abundance of fine B&B accommodation establishments, Guest Houses, excellent Hotels and Lodges.


The Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve covers a combined area of 90 000ha and it was here that the white rhino was saved from extinction - "operation rhino". A visit to the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve, a world renowned game reserve, will also bring you into contact with the Big Five - lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino - as well as a wide variety of other indigenous game. The entire Hluhluwe Umfolozi region is a bird watcher's delight, with sightings ranging from the ever-present pelicans and flamingoes of Lake St. Lucia to a rare treat in the form of sighting the Pink throated Twinspot and Lemon-breasted Canary.


Hluhluwe Umfolozi is an incredible wildlife haven and has a large variety of species. Its abundance of wildlife include: hippo, white and black rhino, lion, cheetah, elephant, , jackal, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, leopard, Nile crocodile, nyala, hyena, eland, kudu, impala, duiker, suni, reedbuck, warthog, bush pig, mongoose, baboons, blue wildebeest, monkeys, tortoises, buffalo, snakes, lizards. Game drives throught the Hluhluwe Umfolozi park on open 4x4's, boat cruises, guided walks, canoeing trips and Horse trails provide a once in a lifetime experience in the wild.

The Hluhluwe Umfolozi region is the traditional home of the ama Zulu. This proud nation migrated to this rich land during the 16th Century and were descendents from the Nguni people. Many tales are told of how the warrior king Shaka united his people and made them a proud and prevailing nation. No visitor can just pass through the Hluhluwe Umfolozi region without exploring the endless tourist attractions and sights. The Zulu people treasure their heritage and culture and visitors to the Hluhluwe Umfolozi area are able to select gifts and souvenirs from a wide range of beadwork, basketry, woodcarvings, and pottery.
